A stunning novel set in modern India, sometimes funny, often shocking, mostly heartbreakingly sad. At times it is almost unbearable to witness the characters' unending struggle for a minimum of security and wellbeing. Whenever things start looking up, fate deals them another cruel blow. There is no happy ending but - strangely - the one person who still has reason for hope gives up while those whose life's dreams are utterly shattered carry on, seeming to have found the fine balance between hope and despair.
Good packaging, fast delivery and even awesome book. Must read for somebody who wants to learn more about India, especially the fastest city of the country - Mumbai.
It is an excellent book! Rohinton Mistry is an amazing author; his writing creates a vivid image of the scene.
... is black. How beautifully one may paint with it, this book shows. The effervescence of life rarely creates light. The amber color of conscious inner light remains to be told.
"A fine balance" starts with slightly confusing and totally unnecessary time shifts which fail to give the story dynamics or some kind of percieved structural quality the author might have intended and is just a little annoying. But this is not too bad since the main characters quickly win the readers heart and suck him into the story.Unfortunately it is the storyline that lacks quality: too many bad things happen to the same people - this is no more credible. The end is simply not only sad but depressing. I suppose Mistry just wanted to include too many of the ugly aspects of Indian life in one book. He certainly is capable to write a great novel but failed this time.Well, it is just a novel, a made-up reality, maybe Mistry`s one. But it is not mine. I have seen a lot of hardship and poverty in India, but there is much more than that. My India fascinates by its huge and cruel contrasts. Mistry only shows the dark sides.
just go for it! it's a tough story about india in the 1950es/1960es that helps you understand the way things are (or used to be), corruption, desperateness and hope.
A story you just jump into and can't let go. It goes through many emotions, sad, funny and just crazy sometimes! The characters lives intertwine with one another in a wonderful way! You start to enjoy how the story comes together when outside interferences begin to change their lives and as in real life poses new problems as each of them have to struggle with.
I'm glad to know that some people write them like they used to! What pleasure it is to read a realistic novel with interesting characters and plot that the reader actually cares about. Here the characters are seen pretty much from the outside, as was the fashion 100 years ago before writers delved into the interior psyche, but with no loss of interest. I can't tell you how much I cared about the four main characters, especially the two tailors whose lives were so filled with tragedy but who managed to endure with their humor and humanity intact. I think that the reason the characters engaged me so much was that the author himself showed great compassion for them. It's been a long time since I read a book that contained such sweetness; it's a great antidote for so much of the negativity of modern fiction. I must say, however, that I was disturbed by the ending of the book--it was too terrible. And I feel that what happened to Maneck was contrived and not quite believable. This book is really better than those of a writer like Dickens because it has a lot of the positive attributes--interesting, unique characters and humor--without some of the lesser qualities--sentimentality and excessive exaggeration. This book is long, but it is very good.
